Composting

Mrs. Caro’s Class

An easy way to “GREEN” up your back yard garden is to add a compost pile. While it may sound daunting, composting is really a simple and economical way to help our environment.

To begin, special bins or containers are not required. A commitment to preserving the earth and the willingness to follow through are the only requirements.

The benefits of composting far outweigh the time invested. Composting reduces the trash we put in landfills, improves plant growth, and eliminates the need for chemical (and expensive) fertilizers and pesticides. It’s fun to help the environment— right in your own back yard!

Composting is a natural process in which organic material decomposes and recycles into rich soil.

Materials:

There are two general categories: “browns” and “greens.” “Brown” materials include dry matter such as wood chips, dried leaves, grass and other plants. “Green” materials include moist matter such as grass cuttings and food scraps (avoid meats, fats, oils and grease).

How to Start:

Select an area of 3—4 square feet.

Gather materials.

Place equal amounts of “browns” and “greens” being sure to cover food scraps with other composting materials.

Water pile until it is the dampness of a wrung out sponge. Cover pile with a tarp to retain moisture and prevent over soaking.

Just keep adding material to the pile.

Congratulate yourself on a job well done!
