Principal’s Message
May 9, 2008
With all of the activities
that are planned this time of the year, it is important for students
to take pride in the school and community. School spirit doesn’t
just happen; it takes special effort from all of us. Parents play a
major role in making positive school spirit a reality.
Parents are necessary to
positively reinforce what is happening at school. Parent attendance
at school events is appreciated and noticed by students. Your
support is needed for many of our end-of-the-year activities.
Cooperation in standing behind any rules and regulations pertaining
to the school or events sponsored by the school is also important.
Even though a particular rule might not meet with total acceptance,
it is important to model to students that it will be followed and
supported until it can be reviewed. The opportunity to be involved
in the total education of students is greater today than ever. The
effort required may also be greater since many families have both
parents working outside the home.
If
you are not able to attend all of the meetings or special
activities, you may still support the school in other ways. Talk to
your children about school, send notes to the school, or make
suggestions. Discuss the papers that your children bring home to
emphasize the importance of time spent in school.
We would like to advise the
parents of our fifth graders that their children will have a summer
reading assignment. They are required to read two books by the end
of the summer and will be assessed during the first week of school
in September in the middle school. The summer reading lists will be
on our web site (www.hopatcongschools.org)
in early to mid June.

HOPATCONG BOROUGH SCHOOLS
ACADEMIC SKILLS IMPROVEMENT
PROGRAM
SUGGESTIONS FOR 2008-2009
At the end of each school year, every New Jersey
school district is required by state law to prepare a plan that
describes the Academic Skills Improvement Program (ASIP) for the
next school year. The Hopatcong Borough School District uses the
New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge and the TerraNova test
and other relevant achievement information to identify the basic
skills of the students at each grade level.
This information is
used to identify those students who will be in need of instructional
support through the Academic Skills Improvement Program during the
2008-2009 school year. The ASIP Program provides instructional
support to those students identified as achieving below the state
and locally established levels of proficiency in reading,
mathematics and writing.
The Hopatcong
Borough School District welcomes suggestions from the parents,
guardians, and community members for the Academic Skills Improvement
Program Application for the 2008-2009 school year. Please make
suggestions or comments in writing to Dr. Joanne Mullane, no later
than June 2, 2008.
