Procedures: Using a premade spreadsheet, collect data regarding the number of student's birthdays in each month. Provide printed instructions for students to replecate spreadsheet. Tell students to make the spreadsheet and to make a graph using "chart wizard" to represent data. Provide written instructions for graphing.

Birthday Tally Sheet - directions

Data table

1.       Open a blank Excel document.

2.      Click into cell A1 and type “Birthday Tally Sheet".

3.      Highlight row A1 to D1 and click on the Merge and Center button.

4.      Format the font by changing the style, size and color, and change the fill color of the cell.

5.      In A2 type in the word “Months” and in B2 type in the word “# of students”

6.      Format the font by changing the style, size and color, and change the fill color of the cell.

7.      Starting from A3 down to A14 type in the months of the year. (January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December)

8.      Format the font by changing the style, size and color of the text.

9.      In A15 type in the word total.

10.   Type in the number of birthdays for each month of the year under the words “# of students”.

11.    Click on cell B15. Then click on fx  (function wizard) and click on sum. Then,  click ok. Hilight cell B3 to B13. When function wizard pops up click ok.

12.   Highlight A3 and B3 down to A14 and B14. Click on Chart wizard and choose the column graph.

13.   Follow sequence of questions. On step 3, type in title “Birthday Tally Sheet”.  For x axes, type “months” and for y axes type in “# of students” 

14.   Format the font by changing the style, size and color, and change the fill color of the cell.

15.   On step 4, click as new sheet. This will be chart 1

16.   Click on one of the bars so that a small square shows. Click again and then go to text color icon. Color each bar in your graph in the same way.

17.   Double click on the months listed below the graph to format. Click on font tab. You may then format the style, color and size of the font. Click ok.

18.   If you finish early, you may graph data as a circle graph. Start with step 12 and choose circle graph in chart wizard.

19.   Follow directions. On step 3 check percentages. On step 4 click as new sheet. This will be chart 2.

20.  Double click on each tab to highlight. Rename sheet 1 as “Birthday Data”. For chart 1, double click and rename as “Bar Graph”. For chart 2, double click and rename as “circle graph”
