PRINCIPAL’S POINT OF VIEW

Are you building a love for reading in your child? “A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t,” Mark Twain once said. But far too many kids would rather spend their time doing anything but reading. Are you doing what you can to help your child love reading? Answer yes or no to each of the questions below.

___ Is reading a regular part of your child’s day? Do you make sure he reads at least 30 minutes a day?

___ Does your child see you reading something (newspaper, magazine, book) nearly every day?

___ Do you allow your child to try to read a book that may be too hard for him? If it is, do you decide to use the book for a read-aloud?

___ Do you make regular trips to the library and encourage your child to check out all types of age-appropriate reading material?

___ Do you plan on enrolling your child in summer reading activities at your local library?

How well are you doing? Each yes answer means you’re doing a good job of raising a child who loves to read. For each no answer, try that idea.

BUS EVACUATION DRILLS: In compliance with state law, on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, the students attending the Tulsa Trail School will participate in bus evacuation drills. The express purpose of the bus evacuation drills is to teach students how to safely exit the bus in an emergency. It is suggested that all students wear older jeans for this drill as they must sit and slide off the floor of the bus through the emergency door. To avoid a potentially embarrassing situation, please do not send girls to school in dresses on Tuesday, May 13th.

SCHOOL SECURITY – BUILDING ACCESS: In an effort to continue to provide a safe and secure school environment, the Tulsa Trail School implemented a few building access policy changes. Students are no longer able to return to the school building once the main office closes at 3:30pm. The building doors will remain locked each evening, and the children are not allowed to return to the classrooms for forgotten items. Parents of our Day Plus students are required to use the gym entrance to pick up their children after hours. Outside groups that use our building (boy scouts, town recreation) have limited access after 6:00pm to their specific rooms and bathrooms only.

PENNY DRIVE: The Hopatcong Ambulance Squad would like to thank the staff & students for helping by collecting pennies and other coins for their penny drive fundraiser. A total of $1034.53 was collected, of which Tulsa Trail contributed $265.66. The Hopatcong Ambulance Squad members are extremely grateful for the donation and it will go to very good use.

WANTED – SCHOOL BUS DRIVER/BUS AIDE FOR JEFFERSON AREA: Driver must have a CDL License with school bus endorsement. Will consider training potential candidate. Driver and aide must be dependable, responsible individuals who possess excellent interpersonal skills and high school diplomas. Fax resume to 973-3998-3683 or mail to SCRC, PO Box 1029, Hopatcong, NJ 07843. The closing date is when this position is filled. E.O.E.

ACADEMIC SKILLS IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM: At the end of each school year, every New Jersey school district is required by state law to prepare a plan that describes the Academic Skills Improvement Program (ASIP) for the next school year. The Hopatcong Borough School District uses the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge and the TerraNova test and other relevant achievement information to identify the basic skills of the students at each grade level. This information is used to identify those students who will be in need of instructional support through the Academic Skills Improvement Program during the 2008-2009 school year. The ASIP program provides instructional support to those students identified as achieving below the state and locally established levels of proficiency in reading, mathematics and writing. The Hopatcong Borough School District welcomes suggestions from the parents, guardians and community members for the Academic Skills Improvement Program Application for the 2008-2009 school year. Please make suggestions or comments in writing to Dr. Joanne Mullane no later than June 2, 2008.

STUDENT DRESS CODE:
Student dress and grooming shall reflect appropriateness, cleanliness and safety within the classroom and school activities. Student dress should not be extreme and it must not be in any significant way distracting to the educational activities of the school. The following is a list of inappropriate articles of clothing:

• Undershirts as outer garments.
• Shirts having a message or picture which is obscene, promotes drinking, smoking or substance abuse or contains a statement which is derogatory to any racial, ethnic or religious group.
• See-through blouses and shirts, including mesh shirts.
• Half blouses and shirts with bare midriff.
• Short-shorts
• Spandex (bicycle) shorts
• Flip-Flops (or any loose-fitting footwear)

Please note: Students are expected to wear footwear at all times. In addition to the above, the administration reserves the right to make a decision regarding the appropriateness of student dress. Students are encouraged to obtain an interpretation of the dress code from the administration in advance if they are in doubt of the applicability of the code to certain articles of clothing. Violation of the dress code may result in disciplinary action. Parents will be called to bring a change of clothing, as might be necessary.

SCHOOL NEWSLETTERS: School newsletters for the Hudson Maxim, Tulsa Trail, Durban Avenue and Hopatcong Middle School are distributed every two weeks. Our next newsletter will be sent home with the children on Friday, May 23, 2008.
